If you’ve ever gotten a whiff of cinnamon or nutmeg, you might become nostalgic for the holidays. While all the senses are connected with memories, smell in particular sparks a flurry of emotional memories. It’s science
When I think of the holidays, I think of stewed cranberries, crisp apples and spiced pumpkin. These were always flavors that could be found on my parent’s Thanksgiving or Christmas table growing up. And guess what? It hasn’t changed much… how’s that for tradition! But one thing is for sure – the way I experience these flavors has evolved.
First, I use more adventurous spices. Some of the more traditional fall spices are nutmeg and cinnamon, but some of my new favorites are ginger, cardamom, clove, star anise, peppercorns, and turmeric. These are all warming spices
that scream autumn! And everyone can afford to use these in more exciting ways – think beyond pumpkin pie spice.
Thankfully these spices are available year-round, but there are benefits of eating seasonally and locally
. If you went to your farmers market right now you would most likely find pumpkins and apples – choose these, as they will have a better flavor and even better health benefits. That’s why we use local ingredients in our spreads, such as New York apples.
Ready to embrace the flavors of fall? Don’t deprive your taste buds to these fabulous flavors just once a year. You can begin enjoying them in four of our best-selling spreads:
